Dayton
News
Guided by Voices
have completed their next release, according to their official website.
The nineteen-track From a Voice Plantation was recorded at
Cro-Magnon Studios in Dayton, with Todd Tobias at the knobs. The
boys did some additional recording at Waterloo Studios in Kent,
Ohio. The new album will not be released by TVT, as were
Do the Collapse and Isolation Drills.
There is an interesting buzz around Dayton that
Darryl from On Pills (later became Philestine and then
magically disappeared) and the Key Note Speaker, has a new
band. Tyler Trent (yes
Tyler Trent from Brainiac) is supposed to be in the band too.
For
The Rest of You...
On March 1st, Florida's Legends
of the Rodeo will embark on a month-long tour as the opener
for their hometown friends Dashboard Confessional. The dates
will serve to introduce national audiences to songs off of their forthcoming
Bieler Bros. Records debut, A Thousand Friday Nights,
which will drop on April 16th.
The new 764-Hero record
is set for release on Tiger Style Records on April 9th. The
new full length once again is being produced by Phil Ek and introduces
a new bassist. The album is titled Nobody Knows This is
Everywhere and will be followed by a tour in April.
Conor Oberst and his
band Desaparecidos cancelled their remaining tour dates due
to van trouble. In
addition, there are rumors that bassist/guitarist Landon Hedges
has quit the band.
Q and Not U will release
a few songs titled "Ten Thousand Animal Calls" b/w "Soft
Pyramids" as a 7" or CD/single sometime this spring. Also,
the band has recorded a cover of Neil Young's "Don't
let it Bring You Down" for Exotic Fever Records' planned
Vietnam Vet's Benefit Comp. The band will tour the midwest/northeast
from April 19th to May 4th.
Matador Records' Mary Timony
will release a new album in May, titled The Golden Dove.
Matador will also be releasing a collection of material recorded
by Richard Hell from 1975 -84.
As Friends Rust have
finished recording their EP, A Young Trophy Band In The Parlance
Of Our Times, to be released on Equal Vision Records.
They recorded the EP with James Wisner (Dashboard Confessional).
May 28 is the target date.
Blink 182's clothing
line, Atticus, will be releasing a CD compilation by the name of
Dragging The Lake, which will include songs from Blink
182, Alkaline Trio, Green Day, New Found Glory,
Midtown and more. The comp will come out on Side One Dummy
and should be out May 7.
The Voodoo Glow Skulls
have signed with the Chicago based, Victory Records.
Jimmy Eat World have
announced that their next single will be "Sweetness".
The band has already filmed a video for the song, which will feature
both animation and live footage.
All three Drop Kick Murphys
St. Patricks Day shows at the Avalon Ballroom will be recorded by
Boston producer Paul Kolderie (Hole, Radiohead, M.M.
Bosstones) for a live CD and DVD that will be released on Epitaph.
A new studio record is slated for release in Fall 2002.
Trav Demsey, drummer for Australian
rockabilly/punk band The Living End has decided to leave
the band citing "musical differences." The band is now
looking for a new drummer for their 3rd album, which is being recorded
in coming months.
Former My Bloody Valentine
guitarist Kevin Shields is contributing an instrumental "Outro,"
to You Don't Need Darkness to Do What You Think Is Right,
a compilation set for release April 1st on the UK label Geographic.
Chicago-based trio Dianogah
is about to head over to Europe for a springtime tour. They've recently
completed their third full-length album, Millions
of Brazilians, which will be released in April on Southern.
The album was recorded with John McEntire of Tortoise and
Sea and Cake at his Soma Studio in Chicago.
The new effort finds the trio experimenting with sound augmented
by piano, synth, Hammond organ, bass clarinet and electric guitar.
Rachel Grimes (of Rachel's), John Upchurch (Coctails)
and McEntire are make guest appearances.
Sub Pop recently added
Canada’s Hot Hot Heat to their active roster. A debut EP
titled Knock Knock Knock
is scheduled for release April 9th. Until then you may visit their

Ex-Smiths guitarist
Johnny Marr is will release his first ever solo project, the Healers,
in the U.S. in the near future. The album features Alonza Bevan
(Kula Shaker) on bass, Zac Starkey (Ringo Starr's son) as
drummer, percussionist Liz Bonney, Adam Grey providing a second
guitar, and Lee Spencer on keys.
The Makers have handed
in their new record. Its called Strangest
Parade. The subject matter is supposedly “dark and frightening.”
It will be available on May 7th.
In the meantime, catch them at Noisepop and various
west coast dates.
The Beachwood Sparks
are in the studio recording the follow up to When
We Were Trees. They also made a video for “By Your Side,” check
it out here.
VUE are currently touring
Europe with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. They also made a
video for “Pictures Of Me” that will be available from the Sup
Pop website soon.
Ugly Casanova (Isaac
from Modest Mouse) will have an album out in May titled Sharpen
Your Teeth.
The Dillinger Escape Plan
will support System of a Down as the sole openers on their
forthcoming European tour, which runs March 5 to April 1 and includes
stops in Italy, Germany, France, England and Scottland.
High on Fire have completed
their forthcoming record, titled Surrounded
by Thieves which was recorded in California's Prairie Sun Studios
with long-time producer Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Melvins)
and mixed at San Francisco's Different Fur Studios. It will be released
worldwide by Relapse Records on May 28.
The newest Brick Layer
Cake album, Whatchamacallit is due to hit stores March 19th. BLC is Todd Trainer
of Shellac fame, doing his slow and dirgey jams for late
nights and lost loves. Think Killdozer, U.S. Maple,
T Rex or Nick Drake amped off on Percodan. He is playing
some select shows, most notably two shows in Chicago with the
Breeders.
On May 7, Touch and Go
will release the new Enon record called, High
Society. Enon, which features John Schmersal of the late and
lamented Brainiac, has added Toko (of the Lapse and Blonde
Redhead) on bass and vocals. In the meantime, pick up their newest EP on Dayton’s Do
Tell Records.
Touch and Go has announced
plans to release the next release the next Black Heart Procession
album, perhaps in June or July, as well as the new Silkworm.
After that, most in August, the new Calexico will come out.
The Dirty Three live CD/DVD should be out in August as well.
The Mekons new album is due in September as is the new Blonde
Redhead.
Louisville, Kentucky’s, 32
Frames (formally Sunday Evening Dinner Club) will release
an EP in the near future on Revelation Records. Founded by
ex-members or a bunch of bands (including Jay Palumbo from Elliott
handling the vocal and guitar duties), 32 Frames blend traditional
hardcore sounds with a strong rock feel comparable to Verbal
Assault and even early Jawbreaker. This EP was recorded
by Kevin Ratterman of Elliott and will be released this Spring/Summer.
Watch for 32 Frames on tour with 7 Seconds this Summer/Fall.
Friction Hours
of Operation: Discography 1991-1994 Double CD will be released
on April 16. Before
Bob Nanna was in Braid or Hey Mercedes, he sang and
played drums in the Friction.
After some searching, they were able to come up with every
song that Friction recorded, whether released or not.
All 32 tracks have been completely remastered onto 2 CDs
and repackaged extensively including tons of photographs, all the
lyrics, and complete liner notes.
Included on the discs are the band's one LP: the long out-of-print
Blurred In Six, all the
7"s and compilation tracks, as well as nearly a dozen tracks
that were finished for a second album, but never released.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
recently announced their first ever tour.
They will accompany Girls Against Boys for the majority
of the stint as well as share the stage for a few dates with Milemarker
and Arab on Radar. They
are also planning to head over to Europe this Spring with Jon
Spencer Blues Explosion.
Their tour dates run from February 16 to March 23.
Portly hellcats Tenacious
D will open for Kid Rock during four dates on his spring
tour: March 22 in Indianapolis, Indiana; March 23 in Louisville,
Kentucky; March 28 in Kansas City, Missouri and March 29 in St.
Louis. The dynamic duo have a headlining tour in the works, according
to their label.
Bassist Melissa Auf der Maur
(Hole, Smashing Pumpkins), bassist Paz Lenchantin
(A Perfect Circle), drummer Samantha Maloney (Hole/Mötley
Crüe) and guitarist Radio Sloan (the Need) have formed
the Chelsea.
Lynyrd’s Innards finished
mastering their 3rd full-length album Untitled No. 3 recently with
Doug Ward. Their new CD should be out by late March/early April
on What Else? Records. The CD is "enhanced" and
includes a Quicktime animated video for their song "Shitman
The Robot". The LP version should be out by late April, just
in time for a Spring tour.
What Else? Records
will release the debut of Indianapolis hardcore band The Dream
Is Dead in April. Not only is the music for this record going
to seriously turn heads, but the artwork now stands to do the same.
They’ve landed the talent of renowned artist Shepard Fairey for
the design of this release. Most of you will recognize Shepard's
work as the creator of the ObeyGiant phenomenon, and as the artist
on such notables as Jello Biafra's "No WTO Combo"
release.
In more What Else? recording
news, post-wave rockers Lenore Syndrome will be heading to
Chicago the weekend of March 15-17 to record with Dale Meiners (Haymarket
Riot, Wesley Willis, American Heritage) for the
8.5" vinyl EP they’re doing. The plan is to record around 8
- 10 songs: 5 of which will appear on the WE? release and the remainder
will appear on EPs on as-yet-unnamed labels.
Three-fourths of the original
lineup of Throwing Muses-- Kristin Hersh, David Narcizo,
and Tanya Donelly-- will be reunited on record for the first
time since 1991's The Real Ramona, according to a report
on the Muses' official website. The as-yet-untitled record, which
has yet to be mixed, will not be released until early 2003. 4AD
and Rhino are teaming up to bring the world The Best of
Belly, a nineteen-track compillation of Donelly's post-Muses
band.
