Gossip -- July 2001

Back from recent tours with Poison the Well, Rune and Blood Has Been Shed, Adam Jackson, Twelve Tribes’ compelling frontman, divulged that the Dayton metal heroes are hard at work on their second Eulogy full-length.  This follow-up to their most recent EP “Instruments” will be should be more of the same thought provoking, bone crushing heavy metal we’ve come to expect from this Dayton quintuplet.

Perhaps Dayton’s youngest screamo superstars, Shadyside, are nearly finished with a new full-length titled, “What Can Save A Man From Himself.”  Blending the starkest elements of Boy Sets Fire, Hot Water Music and the like, this effort promises to be a solid release by the relatively young, yet supremely experienced band.  Talk of a 3-way “live” split CD with Athens’ finest, yet newly defunct metalcore act Keaton, and long-time dead emocore act, Lopan, abound.

Dead Blue Sky, Dayton’s premiere borderline black metal band, have completed the first full-length in a series of contracted efforts for Goodlife Recordings.  Though their debut 7” hasn’t left rotation on my turntable, “Symptoms of an Unwanted Emotion” promises “masterpieces of well-orchestrated fast and furious metal.”   Bettawreckonize heard through the grapevine that the release is already receiving a positive response from hardcore kin in Asia, and Europe and a Japan tour may be in the works.  Where can I get my hot, little hands on this disc?

San Diego’s Boilermaker is back in action after two tremendously long years.  They will release a retrospective of old songs as well as a few fresh, soon-to-be favorites on Better Looking Records on September 18.  A full U.S. tour is in the works.

In other Better Looking Records news, The Good Life, featuring Tim Kasher from Cursive, are currently in the studio with Mike Mogis recording their follow-up to last year’s “Novena on a Nocturn.”  Their previous effort dripped with cold and calculated sorrow, reminiscent of 80’s forefather the Cure and The Smiths…perhaps this will be a light-hearted record in the vein of Blink-182, though probably not.  The record is set for co-release with Saddle Creek Records in 2002.

Stole this tidbit from Buddyhead so we’ll approach it as we would “Ripley’s Believe It or Not.”  Southern California’s snotty yet sexy, post-punk primadonnas, the Blood Brothers, recently finished their second full-length effort, “March on Electric Children,” which was recorded with Matt Bayles.  Though the rumor mill was buzzing with speculation that they’d signed to a “major label,” it seems that Three One G will bring this effort to the spock rockin’ masses.

Les Savy Fav, probably one of the most bizarre, creative, and Rokken indie bands out there, has finished recording their second? Full-length “Go Forth.”  Produced by Phil Elk, the album will be released on Frenchkiss Records in the not-so-distance future.

Columbus's very own DIY co-op "the Addition 13 Project" had made a valiant effort to improve the Columbus scene over the past year.  The Addition 13 web site states that, as of June 30th, the Project has been evicted from there current residence on Whittier Ave. in Columbus.  Since late September 2000, the rented building has been home to a number of self-produced shows ranging from Dead Limp Sleep and Party of Helicopters to Sidecar.  The project stage has also been host to numerous national acts such as 12 Hour Turn and True North.   All is not lost, the search is on for a new home for The Addition 13 Project.  In the meantime, the men and women behind the curtain are still doing there best to bring the shows to town and are asking for help with temporary venues until a suitable replacement is found.  You can contact the Addition 13 Project at addition_thirteen@hotmail.com or check www.dork.com/addition13/  for updates.

According to reports ex-Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell has officially signed on with Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk for more than just a side project. Cornell has begun work on a new studio album with the remaining members of Rage Against The Machine.  The album will feature all-new material and will be produced by Rick Rubin.  The union of these guys brings up questions regarding contracts with respective labels and managers.  With Cornell signed to Interscope and Rage signed to Epic, the imprint of the band's debut album remains a mystery.

Word on the streets is that Tom Delonge, Blink 182’s guitarist, is sporting a Camera Obscura shirt in their newest video for “The Rock Show.”  Seems unlikely that these MTV darlings would have the slightest idea who Troubleman Unlimited’s premiere post-punk noise rockers are but strangers things have happened…like Jimmy Eat World playing his wedding!  It seems that JEW’s biggest fan is no longer Mellissa from “Real World” New Orleans.

The long awaited new full-length by Boston's oldest and nerdiest emo pioneers Piebald is scheduled for release on Big Wheel Recreation in January 2002.  BWR recently released Totally Travis (Travis from Piebald's solo album) and a Piebald discography complete with a rerelease of "When Life Hands You Lemons" which came out on Hydrahead before most of Saves The Day's fans were out of diapers.

In other Big Wheel Recreation news, they released the debut album by (The) Sissy Bars, which includes two members of Boston's Hot Rod Circuit, around June.  Though I haven't heard it, it is supposed to sound like 50's rock and roll ala "Grease."

In July, Blood Of The Young records released the self-titled debut CD by Columbus' Blowup.  Incredible release in the vein of The Locust and Song of Zarathrustra.  In fact, Blowup (which features ex-members of Remingtin (West "F"ing Triad, Anchor Baby, etc.) recently returned from a summer 2000 tour with The Locust.

Perhaps one of the most terrifyingly loud bands I've seen, in league only with Armstrong Secret Nine and My Blood Valentine, was Thumbnail.  Thumbnail retired a couple years back giving our ears plenty of time to heal before the recent release of "The Static" on File 13.  Rock your ears bloody with this one.

Engine Down (ex/Sleepytime Trio that's all that matters) will, hit the road with Mercury Program during November.  Bats and Mice (also ex-Sleepytime Trio, woohoo!) who are currently recording their first full-length for Lovitt also plan an outing in November…no word on what route they will take, but it doesn't matter as long as it leads them through Ohio!

Soiled Doves, which features both members of the Vogue and vocalist Johnny from Blood Brothers have agreed to release their full-length record on GSL.

Though Skinny Puppy is long-gone, maybe, Columbus' The Lack says it is far from dead.  Featuring members of Blowup, The Last Plan?, and Inept's ex-vocalist Scotty will release their Troubleman Unlimited full-length in October.  Check out the Blood Of The Young site to wet your appetite
