For The Rest of You...
Geek America announced their newest section recently.  It is titled, "what's the score?," which is basically the first Hot Or Not style rating game created solely for the indie/punk community. It can be found at http://www.geekamerica.com and then click on the "what's the score" section.

Better Looking Records is pleased to announce the signing of three new bands including: Track Star, No Knife and Maquiladora

A mugger tried to rob Chris Dangerous of The Hives in Jyväskylä, Finland. Apparently Dangerous was sprayed with pepper-spray and the perpetrator attempt to steal his money and cell-phone. Burning Heart described the resolution to the conflict this way: "Of course the robbers were outsmarted, and not a single tear came out of his stone cold face. Don't mess with Texas! Mister Armed & Dangerous himself won't take shit! Rumours say the Finland population was severely decimated around the same time, though this has not been confirmed by Finnish Authorities."

Coheed and Cambria's The Second Stage Turbine Blade an interplay of sparse guitars, driving
rhythms and lush tones will be released on March 5. The legendary Dr. Know makes a guest appearance on the record, lacing one of the tracks with his trademark guitar work.

A full-length release by Jonah's Onelinedrawing is set for this spring.  This will be the first LP from this project. In related New End Original news, it looks as though the band has shrunk, with the original drummer and bassist leaving.

UK’s Gorillaz are readying a collection of rarities, remixes, interactive material and new tracks titled G-Sides. The disc is due February 23rd, coinciding with the opening date of their first tour of the United States. The disc consists of two animated videos and nine tracks, eight of which were previously unavailable in these United States.

D.C.-based elctro-glam rockers Girls Against Boys recently announced that they've signed with Jade Tree.  Jade Trees are shooting for a May release and will be touring the US in March.

In related new, Jade Tree is releasing its first-ever retail label sampler, titled Location Is Everything, Vol. 1, on April 16th. The 23-track sampler will feature previously unreleased songs by Jets to Brazil, the Promise Ring, Pedro the Lion, Milemarker, and Girls Against Boys.

Everyones favorite fat, gay, 40-something rawk icon (or at least mine, pb), Bob Mould, will be releasing three to four (depending on how you count 'em) albums in 2002. The first called Modulate should be at your local Best Buy on March 12. It's supposed to be half-guitar/half-electric, which -- as much I want to love the idea -- brings to mind that weak "rap" song on The Last Dog and Pony Show. Anyway, he has had more than three years to work out the kinks in that he hasn't released anything since 1998. The Modulate track list includes "Sound on Sound," which I'm guessing isn't a cover of that Big Boys song that Jawbox most recently covered. Can't wait to hear "Lost Zoloft," either. That's bound to be a real pick me. I'm imagining something along the lines of "Hanging Tree" from Black Sheets of Rain.  Anyway, later in the year Bob's releasing an all-electronica (yikes) album called Long Playing Grooves (double-yikes!) and something a little Surgarier/acoustic called Body of Song (Holy delusions of grandeur, Bob! Who produced it? Oscar Wilde?). He'll also be on the road in the Spring when recently bankrupt, but yet to be satiated, fans can pick up the BBC recording of a show from the 1998 tour.

Recently disbanded Seattle punkers Murder City Devils are regrouping under the name Dead Low Tide. DLT consists of MCD members Nate Manny, Coady Willis, Spencer Moody, and Gabe "the Roadie," along with Mike Kunka (formerly of Godheadsilo and Enemymine). The Dead Low Tide are in the studio and taking baby steps toward some March tour dates.

Ex-Replacement Paul Westerberg has signed a deal Vagrant Records. Westerberg's new solo CD, which consists of stripped-down scratch tracks, will be titled Stereo/Mono.

San Diego's own Kill Me Tomorrow will hit the road in March to support their EP Chrome Yellow, released by Silver Girl Records. The band has been described as "damaged, post-punk anti-rock, where every guitar, vocal, bass, or electronic component is set on stun to see how abrasive, nutty or off-kilter they can make it."

Pinq, who blend a desert rock feel with swishy-swooshy keyboards, and paralleling lullabyish vocals are set to release their debut full length, Quiet Games For Hot Weather on May 21. They will tour the west coast in March to support the release.

Massachusetts prog-rockers Cave-In kicked off a tour of Europe on January 14, wowing audiences in Germany, England, Spain, and a few other countries. The tour is in support of the full-length Jupiter, which is being released in Europe by Chrome Saint Magnus Records. Cave In recently signed to RCA Records in the U.S. and will be recording with Brendan O'Brien, whose previous output includes Korn, Rage Against the Machine and Stone Temple Pilots. Recording has been slated for early 2002 with a possible release come summer time.

Sparta, who is comprised of three-fifths of At the Drive-In (the ones without the fros), recently announced that they've signed a record deal with Dreamworks. The band will head into Vancouver's Armoury studio this month with producer Jerry Finn (Green Day, Rancid, Fenix TX) to record their debut full-length, which is slated for a summer release. The band will release a four-song EP, Austere, in March.

After shaking their money maker for more than a decade, the Black Crowes are taking a “hiatus.” Despite rumors they're breaking up for good, the Southern rock band, led by battling brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, released a statement Wednesday saying that Chris Robinson is pursuing a solo career and that Steve Gorman has left the band for personal reasons.

After waiting almost five years between Pinkerton and The Green Album, it seems Weezer fans will have to wait less than a year for a new album. The fourth LP will be released around late April.

Arborvitae Records has announced its next release, which will be a compilation album. Called Foreign Nationals, the album will consist of tracks by The Potomac Accord, North by Northwest, The Bright Apocalypse, Guns of Navarone and more. The album is slated for a February release.

Kyle Fischer of Rainer Maria will be releasing his debut record February 5. The record is titled Open Ground and was performed by Kyle, Caithlin De Marrais (Rainer Maria), and Mike Kinsella (Owen).

Pele, Sunday’s Best, and Aloha are all currently recording new records for release on Polyvinyl in spring 2002.

Kill Rock Stars reports that their unique solo artist/DJ Har Mar Superstar is headed out on tour with the Strokes. Har Mar, will be opening on seven of their tour dates across the warmer areas of the United States. Har Mar Superstar, is Sean Tilmann (you may also recognize him from such projects as Sean Na Na and the defunct Amphetamine Reptile band Calvin Krime).

With the Murder City Devils buried, bassist Derek Fudesco's new band Pretty Girls Make Graves will soon be hitting the west coast for a short tour in support of a recently released self-titled single. They are also said to be somewhere in the recording process for an upcoming EP.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' North American tour, originally scheduled to take place between September 18th and October 9th but postponed due to the terrorist attacks of September 11th, has been rescheduled for April and May. The tour begins in California, travels across the northern US and Canada to the East Coast, and finishes in Austin, Texas. In most cases, tickets for the original tour will be honored, but ticketholders are advised to visit their local ticket offices for information about specific shows. Cave's latest album, No More Shall We Part, hit the streets in April 2001 on Reprise Records.

Tiger Style Records has recently announced dates for a really long Tristeza tour that will take them through the US, Japan, and Northern Europe. Next month, Tiger Style will also release Mixed Signals, a remix album that will feature the masterings of Styrofoam, Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins, Windy & Carl, Astorria, Yellow6, Sientific American, Marumari, and others.

Shiner will be releasing their new LP The Egg very soon. Also, DeSoto Records is planning a spring re-release of Shiner's LP Lula Divinia, originally released in 1997 on HitIt! Recordings. The band also plans a springtime west coast tour and a summertime Japanese tour, coinciding with the Japanese release of The Egg.

Brooklyn's Ida are preparing the release of an album featuring alternate versions and remixes of some of their songs. The album is Ida's first release on Timestereo, the new label from His Name is Alive mastermind Warren Defever.

The Gloria Record (ex/Mineral) have returned with a new label (Arena Rock Recording Company) and a full-length album. It's titled Start Here.  The record was recorded by Mike Mogis (The Faint, Bright Eyes) and the release date is set for April 9th.

Terrin of Boilermaker is taking time away from writing new songs to go through chemotherapy to take care of melanoma cancer.  Doctors say he'll make a full recovery.

In other Better Looking Records News, Reuben's Accomplice are writing new songs for their next full-length and preparing to hit the road once again, The Jealous Sound are still writing / recording some tunes, The Good Life have a new album coming out soon on Saddle-Creek records and The Album Leaf / Bright Eyes collaboration 7-inch comes out in early Feb.

In addition, Better Looking’s The And/Ors were in a van accident in Flagstaff, AZ coming home from their US tour.  Apart from a bunch of cuts, bruises and a wrecked van, The And/Ors are fine.  They are back home in San Diego writing new songs and preparing to record their next full-length.

Weezer have invited current emo-wunderkinds, Saves The Day, to accompany them on their East Coast dates spanning February 5-22. STD will also be appearing on Late Night With Conan O’Brien on Feb. 9.
