Gossip -- August 2002

Thom Wright II, 22, guitarist, singer, drummer for too many Ohio screamo, punk and hardcore bands to name (Serkesoron, Keaton, Cities In Ashes, Eiffel (Athens, Ohio), The M-19 Movement, etc.) drowned while swimming in a quarry in Louisville, Ky. on June 30. Thom was a recent graduate of Ohio University and was planning a move to D.C. in the fall to do non-profit work or to teach. While at Ohio University, he was a member of Positive Action, a politically active group for social change; CARE, an organization to help people become better teachers; and organized DIY conferences, people sharing insight to increase individuals’ strengths. He worked in the summer tutoring program in Athens and was a strong supporter of women’s rights. He was a considerate and compassionate individual and his gifts to family and friends were unique and meaningful. Thom was also a vegan and a minimalist. He loved to cook, and enjoyed his music and spending time with family and friends. Those of us who knew and loved him will miss him.

The Dayton, Ohio band with the unfortunately phallic moniker, Rod, have officially taken on a new name, The Story Changes. Same band, same bad ass songs (plus a couple new ones), new name.

In addition to having an article and photos published in the June and July issues of Strength Magazine, LaVeris has completed a web portfolio (www.jasonlaveris.com). This is a great opportunity for Dayton bands to get a real pro to take your publicity shots as his photography has been featured in the GSL catalog, in Enon and Orchid records, in the pages of Strength and Stance magazines, and right here at BW. In addition, Laveris’ band The Cinema Eye recently debuted at Bernie’s Distillery to a very warm reception. Check them out before they are the coolest band you’ve never heard.

The split was sort of amicable and basically had to do with differences in band philosophy and priorities. ITBHOM would like to thank our friends and everyone who showed up to our shows. We’d also like to thank The Dream Is Dead, Anodyne, The M-19 Movement, Denovo, Dead Blue Sky, Mastodon and High on Fire for sharing the stage with us. We’d also like to apologize to Twelve Tribes for dropping off of a show at the last minute. Unfortunately, it couldn’t be helped. Fueled by Ramen’s Cadillac Blindside has also broken up. Trent left a cryptic message on their web page that reads like this, “A turbulent landing on a flight into Chicago's O'Hare airport recently made me realize that everything happens for a reason. Just as possible outcomes were running through my brain I took another glance out the jet window hoping for a promising sign and focused on the cemetery at the end of the runway. Due to our current situation, you can all guess the outcome of the landing, still, I feel lucky to be alive. What if we had crashed and burned? Well, the reason for our break-up would seem more necessary to you, and the strategic placement of the graveyard would suggest the idea of an easy burial for me. All in all, we would like to thank everyone who has believed in us and helped us make our music meaningful throughout our years.”
