Bettawreckonize Gets Warped!
The Vans Warped Tour, an 11-year-old punk rock
summer camp offering all the tattooed, shaggy haired rebellion
you can cram into a day,
will make it’s third stop in Ohio on July 22 at Cincinnati’s
Riverbend Music Center. As we’ve done in the past, your friendly
writers and photographers at Bettawreckonize will be front and
center for the wide array of musical acts, feats of skateboarding
and biking virtuosity, merchandise peddling and sun burning. And
we plan to give you a full and comprehensive report, if we can
make heads or tails of the schedule (there are no headliners or
routine time slots – each band has 30 minutes and the schedule
for the day is revealed that morning).
We’ve already started planning our “must-see” list
for the day, and have decided to give you a preview of what we’re
hoping to catch while navigating the main and side stages at this
year’s Warped Tour. Without further adieu:
The Alternative Press Magazine Tent: Last
year this stop in the merchandise midway provided a welcome opportunity
to spy some of
the tour’s most-anticipated and well-liked acts. We at BW
would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mike Shea
and the folks at A.P. on 20 kick ass years.
The Code of Tha Cutz Stage: If I remember correctly,
this stage features all the independent hip hop a side stage
can handle. If
you’re adequately fried and amplified, this could provide
a much needed break from the crowd surfing, Maiden-inspired riffing,
and the sun (at last year’s Columbus, Ohio stop, this stage
was under a large tent, providing a very welcome shaded alternative
to the sunnier mainstages). BW is making a few stops at this stage
a major priority this year.
Dropkick Murphys (North Stage): Boston’s Dropkick Murphy’s
gets our vote for “sing along” band of the day. Their
anthems of solidarity, friendship and self-improvement are sure
to rouse both new and old fans into linking arms, tossing back
a cold one, and enjoying the true spirit of punk rock. We’re
keeping our finger’s crossed that they play a balanced mix
of anthems from the robust back catalogue and newer cuts from their
latest, Warriors Code.
The Firebird Band (Hot Topic – Kevin Says Stage): The brainchild
of former Braid guitarist Chris Broach was a somewhat unexpected
addition to this year’s line-up. We’re gonna see if
Broach has abandoned chiming in with all those chirpy, spazzy “Yeahs!” that
we at BW have been missing since Braid called it quits.
Hawthorne Heights (Maurice Stage): You
may have already caught these guys during their tireless touring
to support The Silence
in Black and White, but make sure you’re front and center
one more time. These Ohio natives, and friends of BW since their
days under the moniker A Day In The Life, are working on brand
spanking new material (which you can preview on their PureVolume
site) for a 2006 sophomore album and may just debut some of their
new hits. Hawthorne Heights feature a triple axe assault that is
sure to tear the place down.
Motion City Soundtrack (Maurice Stage): Motion
City Soundtrack are the band we’re anticipating will hand everyone a new
one this year. Midwest energy by way of Minneapolis, Minnesota
and a fantastic and witty new album, Commit This To Memory, that
gives Weezer, Blink-182 and any number of other better known acts
a serious run for their money. On a side note, their Mark Hoppus-produced
effort that dropped earlier this summer is a must own for any self-respecting,
self-deprecating music nerd – it has rarely left regular
rotation at Bettawreckonize headquarters all summer.
My Chemical Romance (North Stage): Part
vampiric cult, part graphic novel come to life, part bad ass,
arena-worthy rock powerhouse,
New Jersey’s MCR are sure to garner a good deal of attention
this year. I’ve heard that bullet proof vests, tight pants,
arm bands, and eye make-up are the stage dress for what is likely
to be 30-minutes of unadulterated, big rock spectacle.
The Starting Line (South Stage): With
their recent Geffen/DGC release, Based On A True Story, flying
off the record store shelves,
the band who previously moved 300,000 copies of an acoustic E.P.
have joined the Warped Tour for this year’s jaunt around
the country. We’ll be taking them in to see if they’re
as “too cute for their own good” as we think they are.
Thrice (North Stage): BW favorites
and frequent interviewees, Thrice, just put the finishing touches
on their upcoming Island
release, Vheissu, and have joined the traveling tour for about
the umpteenth time. Despite aurally devouring The Artist and The
Ambulance several times a week, they’re a band the editor
of BW still hasn’t managed to catch in person. If they’re
even half as aggressive and musically acrobatic as the A and the
A suggests, packing a pair of Depends undergarments may be in order.
The Transplants (North Stage): One
of my favorite moments from our 2004 Warped adventure was when
Tim Armstrong (formerly of Op
Ivy and Rancid) joined The (International) Noise Conspiracy on
stage for several Rancid covers towards the end of INC’s
set. So how could we miss the opportunity to see one of modern
punk rock’s godfathers displaying his chops with his new
outfit? The Transplants are currently supporting their recent release,
Haunted Cities, and we at BW are expecting plenty of swooning,
mohawked girls and sweaty shirtless dudes circle pitting from the
crowd, and more than a couple drops of the f-bomb from the stage.
Other things we’re hot on:
Funeral For A Friend (Maurice Stage)
Gogol Bordello (South Stage)
Hopesfall (Smart Punk Stage)
Lost City Angels (Volcom Stage)
