The (International) Noise Conspiracy – Preaching The Rock Gospel and Saving Soul.
Article and Pictures by Jason LaVeris

“Boredom is always counter revolutionary” reads a banner displayed behind The (International) Noise Conspiracy as they rip through their ass shakin set of 60’s style garage rock and R&B. Front Man Dennis Lyxzen moves about in a way reminiscent of Mick Jagger, clapping his hands and shaking his hips while leading his band through a politically charged set of old fashioned protest rock & roll. But this isn’t your ordinary band of anarchists. The five members of the Swedish outfit are dressed in matching denim jackets and black slacks, giving their stage appearance the perfect compliment to their subversive mod style and smooth sound. “We wanted to do a band that would be very accessible to people, and by doing so, making the politics accessible” says Noise Conspiracy singer Dennis Lyxzen. “It is music that we really love, but at the same time it is also a conscious attempt to get away from all forms of protest music being strictly punk rock music”.

A New Morning, Changing Weather, is The INC’s third full-length effort and the second released on Epitaph Records for the band in the U.S. and is available through Burning Heart Records in the group’s native Sweden. On A New Morning, and through out their career, The INC tackle the demons of capitalism, oppression, and corporate dominated culture to the sounds of classic rhythm & blues complete with piano parts and saxophone interludes on top of the garage rockin grooves. It may seem unusual to some people, especially to those who strictly abide by the “do it yourself” ethic of punk rock, that a band with such radical political views would be affiliated with big record labels. “These ideas are something that everyone needs to hear,” says Lyxzen.  “Its not some sort of marketing scam that we’re going to play music and try to sell a million records.” I don’t mind being on a bigger label, I don’t think it matters if your on Epitaph or Ebulition because you’re still going to be working and you’re still going to be a wage slave one way or the other”.

The INC was formed in late 1998 after Lyxzen’s former band, the now legendary Refused, broke up during the middle of a U.S. tour. Lyxzen and guitarist Lars Stromberg had been collaborating for a while, but with Refused out of the picture the two recruited drummer Ludwig Dahler, bassist Inge Johanson, and keyboardist Sara Almgren with plans for something new. “Everyone involved knew that we were going to form the new band, it just wound up being sooner than we expected.”

After a slew of singles that were eventually compiled into the group’s first full length in 1999 titled The First Conspiracy, The INC completed an illegal and entirely underground tour of China. Spreading the word of free speech during the month of the ten-year anniversary of the massacre at Tiananamen Square, The group successfully completed the shows and made it out alive. In the past year, the group has completed two tours of the U.S., raging against corporate America while supporting their second album Survival Sickness. The INC has proven that they are willing to do whatever it takes to spread their Marxist beliefs across the world. “I don’t really care if the kids who read Heartattack don’t like us. Scene politics don’t really bother me.”
