Deafheaven, Roads To Judah
Deafheaven, Roads To Judah, Deathwish Inc.
The buzz surrounding Deafheaven has been, well, deafening in recent months. Their first release for Deathwish Inc., Roads To Judah, meets the hype head on and proves that Deafheaven is an enigmatic force to be reckoned with. RtJ is a genre bending effort that unites shoegazers and metalheads on dark, sorrowful and chaotic ground. Imagine the Cure’s Disintegration performed by a U.S. black metal band comprised of ex-members of Antioch Arrow and Mohinder and you’ll definitely end up in Deafheaven’s dimly lit ballpark. This shit resonates with YouIndie because this is just the kind of unrelenting, preconception destroying water that we like our music treading. Intense and cathartic, Deafheaven pick up right where their well-received debut demo left things and deliver 40-minutes of lush and tense songcraft that is bound to land them in pole position with their contemporaries. Unfortunately, I’m not sure who their contemporaries are. Liturgy or Krallice? Maybe. Tombs? Perhaps. Gravity Records era Screamo? Sort of. Regardless, the band have set the bar high and we’ll be riddled with excitement and anticipation when details of their next full-length surface.
